Rashard never knew his dad, and his mother did the best she could to make ends meet. He ran away from home, and at 16 he was arrested and charged as an adult for breaking into houses and possession of stolen goods. By 18, he was convicted of many nonviolent felonies. In 2012, when this image was taken, he had escaped gang life. He wanted to start over, and use his past to help other young black men. But Rashard’s felonies follow him wherever he goes. These convictions make it difficult for ex-offenders to find a job, a place to live, to get an education and live a stable life. How will Rashard become more than his past if he is perpetually punished for his mistakes? North Carolina and New York are the only states that still prosecute 16-year olds as adults in felony cases. Samuel Oliver-Bruno is a Mexican #immigrant who was living in #sanctuary at CityWell Church in Durham, N.C. since late 2017. The day after Thanksgiving, November 23, 2018, he was lured to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Morrisville for a fingerprint appoint -- part of the process to have a stay on his deportation, and ultimately become a citizen. He was suddenly arrested by #ICE agents, but not after his church community blocked his detention van from leaving the parking lot for hours. The landfill was placed in rural Shocco, a small town in Warren County, an hour north of Durham, that was 75% African American. Burwell and others staged sustained protests over the landfill construction which led to hundreds of arrests. Using aerial photographs and other methods, he and a team have measured 1,500 feet of shoreline here, and concludes that from 1962 to 1998 it has eroded at an average rate of about 1 foot a year, with a high of 2.4 feet a year. The cemetery is sacred ground to her, and she wants to be buried there, right next to her grandparents, Josephine and Luther Gray, even if the Pamlico Sound eventually swallows the cemetery and she vanishes into the sea. “If I was [buried] there and the water washed me out, I wouldn't know it anyway so what difference does it make?” she says. “Might as well be there, washed out all over the place. Creech said that ‘solastalgia’, or a sense of loss, homesickness and distress specifically caused by environmental change around their home and a sense of powerlessness over that change was “absolutely” a driving factor in her preservation efforts. If you are watching from the sound it’s as if the tourists materialize out of nothing, and scurry down to the shoreline like gazelles herding to a wet spot on a savannah. Though coastal marshes and other wetlands only cover 5 percent of the planet’s land, they store a quarter of the carbon found in the earth’s soil, and a healthy acre of coastal marsh can clean more carbon out of the air than an acre of Amazon.
